Afghanistan-Taliban crisis Highlights: Taliban urge Afghan unity as protests spread to Kabul

The Afghan-Taliban crisis highlighted: The Taliban called the Afghan Imam to encourage unity when they held the first Friday prayer since the Islamic group won the country’s control, in protest against the takeover spread to more cities on Thursday, including the capital.

Some people died when Taliban guerrillas opened fire on the crowd in the eastern city of Asadabad, a witness said. Another witness reported a shot near a general meeting in Kabul, but they seemed to shoot the Taliban into the air.

On Thursday, the Taliban celebrated Afghanistan’s independence day, stating that it had defeated “Arrogant World Power” in the United States. Afghan independence day commemorates the 1919 agreement which ends the British government in the Central Asian country, the Associated Press reported.

China has played a constructive role in promoting peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan and is welcome to contribute to the rebuilding of the country, Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen to Chinese media.

In dealing with the Taliban, the stronger China might be able to take advantage of the fact that unlike Russia and the United States, it has not been fighting in Afghanistan.

China is a large country with the economy and large capacity – I think they can play a huge role in rebuilding, rehabilitation, Afghanistan reconstruction,” Shaheen told CGTN television in an interview on Thursday.

The delegation of leading Afghan leaders and officials has warned that the Taliban government will not last long if it repeats past mistakes.

The delegation, led by the Afghan parliamentary speaker, Mir Rehman Rehmani, spoke to reporters at Islamabad on Thursday, after meeting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and other government and military officials this week. Afghanistan arrived at the capital of Pakistan on Monday, the day after the Taliban swept kabul and took over Afghanistan.

A former Afghan vice president, Mohammad Youngis Qanooni, said the future government in Afghanistan must be inclusive, with the participation of all ethnic groups. (AP)
