Composer, singer, lyricist Leslee Lewis first caught the eye of desi music lovers within the late nighties. He along side Hariharan of the Colonial Cousins fame, created many memorable melodies including ‘Pari Hoon Main’, ‘ Jaman Samjha Karo’, ‘Talking about his incredible musical journey of over three decades, Leslee tells Bombay Times, “My journey has been a rock n roll. it’s rocked sometimes and has rolled sometimes. you’ll find that my music is usually changing during a way. ‘Pari Hoon Main’ was more Pahadi folk type and ‘Janam Samjha Karo’, was straight up pop and Colonial Cousins’ second album ‘The Way We Do It’ was a rap. i’m not a rapper but still i’m rapping therein album. So on behalf of me it’s always been great to explore different sorts of music and expose it to the Indian audience. there’s such a lot music Indian audience hasn’t even heard yet. That’s what I even have wiped out the 90’s to introduce all to Pop, which wasn’t there in Bollywood and that’s what i’m trying to try to to now with Global Indie which is Indie pop version 2.0 in 2021.”
The musician feels that Hindi film music has witnessed major changes over the years. He says, “There have always been changes within the Hindi film music, because that’s what Bollywood is. It finds new genres and creates its own mix and presents it to the Indian audience. Right from the days of Naushad ji, RD Burman music has been changing. If you see A.R Rahman in his youth , his songs were dubbed to Hindi like ‘Tu Hi Re’, which was also an enormous change. People heard his music and realised it’s amazing and different from what they need heard in Bollywood. If you check out movies like ‘Rock on’ and ‘Gully Boy’, people have realised there’s such a lot more to typical music, there’s pop and rock, then there’s rap. So there are spaces where people have seen and been discovering more types and genres of music. Now a bit like one cannot determine whether or not they just like the curves of a river or the part that’s up within the mountains, within the same way it’s difficult on behalf of me to work out one change that i prefer .”
He had first rapped in ‘The Way We Do It’ way back in 1998. move now, rap has become huge. once we ask Leslee about his combat rap as a genre of music he says, “Rap has been around within the world for an extended time, obviously within the past years rap has become traction and just about standard within the popular music genre culture of the planet .”

Leslee believes that rap has been a neighborhood of our culture for long and has been heard in serious music too. “In India also movies like ‘Gully Boy’ have brought rap to the general public area, but rap has been in India too for an extended time. If one has heard serious music like Kathas and every one , sure they need a special rhythm more like an Indian style but it’s recitation is within the same way. an honest rap is once you are telling some story during a rhythmic fashion, within the same way Indian serious music is additionally about story-telling, stories of Lord Krishna for an example, it’s also a rap during a way. American rap is additionally a story telling but with their own style. within the 90’s when Baba Sehgal started rap he was telling about his life then everybody could relate thereto . That’s what Omar Gooding is additionally doing in Entourage, he’s telling his biography in rap so people can relate thereto . Omar’s rap has been very natural and fluid and fits perfectly with ATG’s track. he’s like an under-hood producer and that’s the simplest thing I feel, he wants the people to groove with the track and he has made sure this is able to happen. I as a singer need to be myself which is beautiful . I feel this stuff are what an honest collaboration is all about.”
