Arjun Kapoor recalls being a ‘Terrible Assistant’ on Kal Ho Naa Ho: ‘I used to sleep off on set’

Arjun Kapoor said that he was an assistant director ‘terrible’ when he worked at Kal Ho Naa Ho. However, he became better at work when he helped Nikkhil Advani again in Salaam-e-Ishq.

Before Arjun Kapoor made his debut as an actor with Ishaqzaade in 2012, he worked as an assistant director for Nikkhil Advani at Kal Ho Naa Ho and Salaam-e-Ishq. During the chat on Sunday, he remembered being a ‘terrible assistant’ at first.

Arjun Kapoor claimed to be ‘special’ when he took a baby step in the film industry and said that he thought as an assistant director would be an easy job. However, he turned out to be ‘terrible’ at first. He spoke at the Clubhouse session with the Bollywood Film Club, moderated by Janice Sequeira and Aniruddha Guha.

“I was a terrible assistant when I started. I’m terrible. I think it will be a piece of cake and I hate saying this, like someone who has grown in a protected environment, I protected, I was protected and I got privileges. Privileged not only means the financial aspects, it’s about the security you have from knowing that you can make mistakes and stumble and learn along the way even without getting qualifications in place. I was allowed to do these things, I was allowed to make my mistakes without consequences that had a consequence bigger, “he said.

Arjun said that he first provided editing a shot trailer and cut for Shakti: Strength, which was produced by his father Boney Kapoor. He then worked as an assistant director.

“I became an assistant to Kal Ho Naa Ho and I was terrible. Terrible in the sense, I used to sleep on the set, I used to walk after Nikkhil sir, I used to do things that could be done in 15 minutes more than four hours. I just not too good but on the set, I really fell in love with the process. Then, I started working in Salaam-e-Ishq, I got better. So, I learned about the job and I realized that I wanted to make a film in some capacity or another, “he said.

Arjun will be seen next in police Bhoot Pavan Kirpalani, along with Saif Ali Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Yami Gautam. The film is scheduled to release directly to Digital at Disney + Hotstar on September 17.
